To our patients:
This is a reminder to get your annual flu shot if you have not already. We are starting to see influenza rates rise in the U.S., and there is concern that this may be a serious flu season, similar to last year when we had between 600,000 – 1.2 million people hospitalized and between 27,000 – 130,000 deaths. This is because one of the strains of Influenza A (H3N2) has achieved several different mutations, and high numbers of influenza hospitalizations have already been reported this year in Japan and Great Britain. This year’s vaccine is against a previous version of H3N2, so although it may not be as effective against the current strain, it does offer protection against severity of disease. We definitely recommend all people get vaccinated if you have not already done so. We also remind you to get some home influenza test kits (they often come together with COVID tests) to use if you do become sick. If you test positive for influenza, you should contact us within the first 3 days of symptom onset because there is an antiviral medication that can shorten your symptoms. Happy Thanksgiving, and stay well this holiday season! Wynnshang Sun, M.D. Casey Fulinara, PA-C
